It is time again for Camper of the Week!
This week I am featuring Laurie Chomko Mistretta ! Thank you laurie for being a loyal and enthusiastic teammate over the years and for sharing your story with us:)
How long have you been a MBC teammate? And what got you started?
My children were in elementary school and I was looking for an exercise routine that I could and would stick to. I was tired of exercising after work, when I was wiped out after a full day. My neighbors and I were talking about trying MBC and decided we’d try it out. We also decided to carpool to the field together to help each other be accountable. It sure worked - I’ve been going to Melrose boot camp for over 10 years and I love it!
What do you like most about the program? What keeps you coming back?
I like that program because it’s designed for everyone no matter what shape you’re in - from never worked out to experienced boot campers. Everyone works at their own pace as the routines are based on time - bodyweight exercises like push-ups, and squats interspersed with toning and cardio exercises - jumping jacks and high knees. There’s something for everyone as Joy provides modifications to each exercise to build upon as you get stronger.
And the best part of MBC is the SPIRIT. Joy has created a community and camaraderie among all the teammates. We laugh and have fun while working out, which makes the time fly by. Everyone is super friendly and supportive. I personally have made amazing friends over the years!
What, if any, benefits have you experienced through your participation?
There are numerous benefits I experienced such as seeing beautiful sunrises and learning how to do a burpee properly. One of my favorites is not realizing how strong I’d become. I never thought I could do ‘boot camp’. It most be really difficult and only for athletic people. Was I wrong! By sticking with it and doing the best I can do at that moment, I’ve built up the strength to do bleachers, hill repeats and military runs to eventually running 5ks.
What would you say to someone considering joining the team?
It’s a great way to start your day and be able to say I’ve already exercised today! You don’t have to be super fit - the program is designed so you can make the most out of every exercise. Each workout is different so you’re working different parts of your body each session. You’ll get to a point where you WANT to go to MBC. And Joy and the members are fun and social!
Anything else you’d like to add?
I always feel so much better about myself when I go! I have more energy throughout the day, I have a better attitude and sleep better. I GET to do burpees! I have a love/hate relationship with them. 😊

Dear Friends,

This week we enter phase 3 of reopening Massachusetts.
While yoga studios are included in the list of businesses that are allowed to open starting this week, Joy Yoga will remain closed. As I announced In my last email, the new protocols are challenging, and in some cases, impossible for us to implement. I am hopeful that the current trends in Ma. will continue, adjustments to the reopening regulations will be made, and Joy Yoga will be able to reopen in September.

Gratefully, I was safely able to reopen Melrose Boot Camp outdoors on June 15. The current session ends on July 31 and the next session will begin on August 3. This is of course assuming all continues to go well. If you want to join for the August session please be sure to join our email list and connect through Facebook so you are among the first to know when registration opens.

Currently I am offering free zoom classes and backyard fun for children. The in-person programs filled up right away however you can still claim a spot if someone cancels through Sign Up Genius. Groups are limited to 6 children.

Monday, Wed. & Fridays:
9-12 Summer Fun in Joy's Backyard for 6 children. June 15-July 31 Sign Up Genius

Tuesdays:
10-10:45am, Preschool Zoom Yoga (email me for the zoom ID)
11-11:45am, 6-8 yo ish zoom (email me for the zoom ID)

Thursdays:
9-10am, Multi-Age Backyard Yoga with Chickens Sign Up Genius
11-12pm,Tween/Teen Zoom Yoga (email me for the zoom ID)

I know that many families are in need of child-care support. I have a list of local teens available to help. Please email me and I would be happy to connect you!

And finally, I have set up a fundraising page if you feel so inclined to contribute.

Thank you all for your kindness and support. I am so very appreciative.

Love,

Joy

Summer Programs

6/8/2020

Dear Friends,

Summer recreational programs for children are allowed to open during phase 2 of the reopening plan. I have been studying the new guidelines in depth. The added requirements may be necessary, however many are impossible for me to implement at Joy Yoga.

I am heartbroken to let you know that I have to cancel all of our summer enrichment weeks, June through August. If your child was registered for any days this summer, please email me and I will issue you a refund.

Many of you know me well enough to know that heartbroken is not an exaggeration. This is incredibly upsetting for me personally and professionally. This decision was not made lightly. I am very sorry for the inconvenience. I know many children have been looking forward to summertime at Joy Yoga, and so have I.

In the coming days you will be receiving a list of resources from me that I hope will help you and your family this summer. I know we will get through this together. I am so thankful to you and this whole community. I am very aware of how much I have to be grateful for.

Love, Joy

Thank you all for your patience! I am studying the new protocols for summer programs. I know these added requirements are necessary. They are also very challenging and in some cases maybe impossible for a unique program like mine to implement. I want to be sure I have all the information I need before I make a decision. I do realize that parents need to know as soon as possible. If your child is registered for any days in July or August you will hear from me by Friday June 12. ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
