Below is my letter to the Melrose Parks Commission which I read the remote meeting on Tuesday, April 13, 2021.
Good evening, My name is Joy Fay and I am here to share my thoughts on field use fees. I am the owner and operator of Melrose Boot Camp, an early morning outdoor exercise program for adults. I have lived in Melrose for 19 years. As many of you can imagine, this past year has taken a dramatic toll on me and my business. 7 years ago I expanded my offerings. In addition to the early morning boot camp classes, I also opened a yoga studio on Green Street. I had to close the studio last March due to the current health crisis. Melrose Boot Camp is now my main focus and my main source of income. I am just now getting back on my feet. I know I don’t need to tell you what a hard year it has been. I would like to use Fred Green field MWF for less than 3 hours per morning for the remainder of this spring, summer and through the month of October. I know that having a field permit is important. It is especially important now, as we take every precaution to keep residents safe and separated from one another and not have groups overlapping. I take the health and safety of my clients, or as I like to call them, teammates, seriously. I am here today to ask you to consider waving fees associated with such permits through the upcoming warm weather seasons to give me the chance to get back up and running again successfully. Fred Green Field is a great spot for us. My early morning classes are unique as the time we meet is not desirable for most groups. We exercise under the moon and are done when most people are just beginning their days. We need as a community to get people back outside safely exercising. I respectfully ask you to consider my request. We are in this together and I need your help. Thank you. Sincerely, Joy Fay 149 Essex Street Melrose

How long have you been involved with MBC? I've been a "lifer" ....keep hanging around and coming back. To the best of my ability to track, I've been attending since we used to refer to Joy as Sargent, round about 2007, I think. What do you like most about the program? What keeps you coming back? Accountability, MBC makes me honest and true to commitments in making time for exercise. Plus, it's so early, I don't have the excuse I've got something else going on. And of course the camaraderie with Joy as our glue. What, if any, benefits have you experienced through your participation? My seasons are not summer, spring, winter, fall - they are "MBC on" or "MBC off". I always feel better in the "MBC on" season. What would you say to someone considering joining the team? You'll only regret NOT coming, but never regret coming. Anything else you would like to add? MBC's made a big difference in my life, in lots of ways! Dear Friends,
MBC is back outside for April! Plus I am adding at-home, zoom workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays:) If you have already signed up....THANK YOU! If not, please read on and I encourage you to give it a try! Our next session will be April 5-30. MWF 5:15, 6:15, 7:15. Workouts will be held outdoors most mornings with the zoom platform as a back up during inclement weather. Tuesday & Thursday workouts will be through the zoom platform for EVERY workout. 5:15, 6:15 & 7:15. (by the way: you can certainly sign up for both and attend 5 days per week!) Once you sign up, you will receive the new team email Sunday with more important details. I look forward to getting started! Please click Here to join us this April! Thank you! Joy It’s time for Boot Camper or the week! This week we highlight Joanne Whooley!! Thank you Joanne! Fun fact: Joanne has been riding the Pan Mass Challenge since 2015! Amazing!
How long have you been involved with MBC? Off and on for 10+ years. I saw a group of people with MBC shirts after a road race, and having just moved to Melrose, asked them what it was all about. They told me to check it out and I did – granted it was a post-race party and beers may have been involved, but I signed up and have been hooked ever since! What do you like most about the program? What keeps you coming back? Honestly, the fact that I don’t have to think. We are all overloaded with to do lists, deadlines, distractions, decisions to be made, that it’s nice to turn off my brain and have Joy tell me what to do for a while. I keep coming back because the support of Joy and the rest of the Campers is invaluable and as Joy says - You never regret going to boot camp, but you may regret NOT going to boot camp! What, if any, benefits have you experienced through your participation? I feel stronger – both physically and mentally. The physical is a no brainer, you’re working out and the more you do, the stronger you get. The mental sneaks up on you. At first it’s hard to get out of bed, especially in the dark winter months. But if I can get up and work out for 45 minutes, I feel like can tackle the rest of my day and that I’ve accomplished something. What would you say to someone considering joining the team? Try it out, don’t be afraid. It’s not at all intimidating – everyone is welcoming and everything can be modified. It’s your time, so you make it work for you. Anything else you would like to add? Having Joy figure out a way to continue boot camp during a pandemic and pivoting to the Zoom platform has made a huge difference in getting through all of this. I will be forever grateful to Joy for ushering so many of us with such care, humor and resolve through a very difficult time. |
