It is time again for Camper of the Week!
This week I am featuring Laurie Chomko Mistretta ! Thank you laurie for being a loyal and enthusiastic teammate over the years and for sharing your story with us:)
How long have you been a MBC teammate? And what got you started?
My children were in elementary school and I was looking for an exercise routine that I could and would stick to. I was tired of exercising after work, when I was wiped out after a full day. My neighbors and I were talking about trying MBC and decided we’d try it out. We also decided to carpool to the field together to help each other be accountable. It sure worked - I’ve been going to Melrose boot camp for over 10 years and I love it!
What do you like most about the program? What keeps you coming back?
I like that program because it’s designed for everyone no matter what shape you’re in - from never worked out to experienced boot campers. Everyone works at their own pace as the routines are based on time - bodyweight exercises like push-ups, and squats interspersed with toning and cardio exercises - jumping jacks and high knees. There’s something for everyone as Joy provides modifications to each exercise to build upon as you get stronger.
And the best part of MBC is the SPIRIT. Joy has created a community and camaraderie among all the teammates. We laugh and have fun while working out, which makes the time fly by. Everyone is super friendly and supportive. I personally have made amazing friends over the years!
What, if any, benefits have you experienced through your participation?
There are numerous benefits I experienced such as seeing beautiful sunrises and learning how to do a burpee properly. One of my favorites is not realizing how strong I’d become. I never thought I could do ‘boot camp’. It most be really difficult and only for athletic people. Was I wrong! By sticking with it and doing the best I can do at that moment, I’ve built up the strength to do bleachers, hill repeats and military runs to eventually running 5ks.
What would you say to someone considering joining the team?
It’s a great way to start your day and be able to say I’ve already exercised today! You don’t have to be super fit - the program is designed so you can make the most out of every exercise. Each workout is different so you’re working different parts of your body each session. You’ll get to a point where you WANT to go to MBC. And Joy and the members are fun and social!
Anything else you’d like to add?
I always feel so much better about myself when I go! I have more energy throughout the day, I have a better attitude and sleep better. I GET to do burpees! I have a love/hate relationship with them. 😊
