Boot Camp FAQ

I heard boot camp is for people who are already active. Is that true?
Melrose Boot Camp is for anyone looking to jump-start an exercise habit or take their fitness to the next level. "Currently active" doesn't mean you need to be hitting the gym regularly or running every day — daily life counts. Chasing your kids around the yard? That counts. We do recommend checking with your doctor before starting any new exercise program. And throughout every session, we encourage teammates to make modifications with the trainer's guidance. Your experience matters to us, so never hesitate to let your trainer know how we can make it better. What's the attendance policy?
Workouts are sold as a program for the number of weeks specified. We don't offer refunds for missed classes, but our pricing already accounts for the fact that life happens and a few sessions may be missed within a session. Workouts cannot be carried over into a new session.

What happens if it rains?
We meet rain or shine.

Do you meet outside in the winter?

During the winter months, Melrose Boot Camp moves to Zoom. The workouts are similar in structure, though with less running, and you get the same community and trainer guidance from wherever you are.

What should I bring on my first day?

Bring a water bottle and a towel or mat if you'd like one. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes appropriate for exercise. Layers are a good idea — you'll warm up quickly once we get moving.

Is there a lot of running?

Running in boot camp is mostly short bursts to raise heart rates, challenge your cardiovascular system, and stay warm in cooler weather. Long-distance running is not part of the program. If you have any physical restrictions, talk to your trainer — modifications are strongly encouraged and are a core part of what MBC is all about. All running can be replaced with walking.

Can I arrive late or leave early?

Yes — a shorter workout is better than no workout. Just keep in mind that we sometimes move to a neighboring location mid-session, and if no one shows up at start time, the instructor won't wait. Arriving late does carry that small risk, especially in smaller classes.

What kinds of exercises should I expect?

Every session is different. We follow the principle of muscle confusion — varying the challenges and intensities to keep your body and mind engaged and the workouts effective. Expect body weight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups, along with simple tools like resistance bands, jump ropes, and agility ladders. One of the things we hope you take away from MBC is that a great workout doesn't require fancy equipment or a lot of space. Add good people, and it might even be fun.

I
just signed up for a 5k. Will boot camp help me train for it?

Boot camp workouts are a great complement to 5k preparation. If you're training for something longer than a 5k or 10k, talk to your trainer for guidance on balancing boot camp with your running program.

I missed registration for the current session. Can I still join?
If the program isn't at capacity, you're welcome to join at any point. Reach out and we'll let you know what's available.

Where do programs meet?

We use local parks, fields, and tracks throughout Melrose, making creative use of whatever the space offers — benches, walls, hills. Teams currently meet in the vicinity of Tremont St.
