Boot Camper of the week!

It’s time for Boot Camper or the week! This week we highlight Joanne Whooley!! Thank you Joanne! Fun fact: Joanne has been riding the Pan Mass Challenge since 2015! Amazing!
How long have you been  involved with MBC?
Off and on for 10+ years.  I saw a group of people with MBC shirts after a road race, and having just moved to Melrose, asked them what it was all about.  They told me to check it out and I did – granted it was a post-race party and beers may have been involved, but I signed up and have been hooked ever since!
What do you like most about the program? What keeps you coming back?
Honestly, the fact that I don’t have to think.  We are all overloaded with to do lists, deadlines, distractions, decisions to be made, that it’s nice to turn off my brain and have Joy tell me what to do for a while.
I keep coming back because the support of Joy and the rest of the Campers is invaluable and as Joy says - You never regret going to boot camp, but you may regret NOT going to boot camp!
What, if any, benefits have you experienced through your participation?
I feel stronger – both physically and mentally.  The physical is a no brainer, you’re working out and the more you do, the stronger you get.  The mental sneaks up on you.  At first it’s hard to get out of bed, especially in the dark winter months.  But if I can get up and work out for 45 minutes, I feel like can tackle the rest of my day and that I’ve accomplished something.
What would you say to someone considering joining the team?
Try it out, don’t be afraid.  It’s not at all intimidating – everyone is welcoming and everything can be modified.  It’s your time, so you make it work for you.
Anything else you would like to add?
Having Joy figure out a way to continue boot camp during a pandemic and pivoting to the Zoom platform has made a huge difference in getting through all of this.  I will be forever grateful to Joy for ushering so many of us with such care, humor and resolve through a very difficult time.

Dear Teammates,

I am sorry it took me a while to get this information to you, but hopefully you will see this good news as being worth the wait!

MBC is getting back outside for the April session after all! But hold on because I know some of you who live farther away may be freaking out lol. I am adding zoom workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the month of April as a test run... to see if I can handle it:)

Our next session will be April 5-30. MWF 5:15, 6:15, 7:15. Workouts will be held virtually some mornings and in person most mornings based on weather, location and my schedule. Teammates will be notified through email where specific workouts will take place.

Tuesday & Thursday workouts will be through the zoom platform for EVERY workout. 5:15, 6:15 & 7:15 (Assuming people sign up!)

(by the way: you can certainly sign up for both and attend 5 days per week!)

Now a few more important details:

We have permission from Melrose Parks Department to use Fred Green Field on April 5,7,9,12 for a minimal fee. The parks Department Commission is meeting on April 12 about field fees going forward. I will be attending this meeting (virtually of course) and sharing my thoughts on this topic. I am hopeful that the decided upon fees will be appropriate and affordable and that we can continue to use the field. If not, I will find us another spot to meet.

And now...I am happy to say that Registration is now open!!

Please click Here to join us this April!

Thank you all so much for not only supporting my small business with your participation but also for your friendship during this challenging year. I deeply appreciate you!

Camper of the week part 3! Introducing you to Lisa Loveland. Thank you Lisa for sharing your story with us. I am grateful for your participation and friendship.
I have been a teammate for over 10 years.  I started because working out alone was just not working for me.  I was regularly lifting weights (heavy ones), but I was not getting cardio that I needed.  Melrose Bootcamp gave me the body weight exercises and the cardio in a fun and motivating environment. It’s the best workout for your whole body.
I love working work out with Joy and the team as a whole.  It keeps me honest.  When I don’t want to get up and workout, I know that they are waiting for me, cheering me on.  When I am stressed or overwhelmed, I can turn my mind off and do something good for my body. When I am having a good day, working out makes it even better. Joy always says that you never regret being there, and she is completely right.
I am not getting any younger.  But the regular workouts keep me fit, improve my health, and increase my well-being.  Joy works with me to personalize my workouts.  Also, there is nothing like working out on a cool summer morning while watching the sunrise.
Please join our group.  We are not intimidating, we are not scary, we are a great group of people who want to work out, support each other, and have fun.
Joy is the best.  She is calming and motivating at the same time. She works you out hard, while supporting your well-being.  She is there for all of her Boot Campers.

Camper of the Week!

It is time again for Camper of the Week!
This week I am featuring Laurie Chomko Mistretta ! Thank you laurie for being a loyal and enthusiastic teammate over the years and for sharing your story with us:)
How long have you been a MBC teammate? And what got you started?
My children were in elementary school and I was looking for an exercise routine that I could and would stick to. I was tired of exercising after work, when I was wiped out after a full day. My neighbors and I were talking about trying MBC and decided we’d try it out. We also decided to carpool to the field together to help each other be accountable. It sure worked - I’ve been going to Melrose boot camp for over 10 years and I love it!
What do you like most about the program? What keeps you coming back?
I like that program because it’s designed for everyone no matter what shape you’re in - from never worked out to experienced boot campers. Everyone works at their own pace as the routines are based on time - bodyweight exercises like push-ups, and squats interspersed with toning and cardio exercises - jumping jacks and high knees. There’s something for everyone as Joy provides modifications to each exercise to build upon as you get stronger.
And the best part of MBC is the SPIRIT. Joy has created a community and camaraderie among all the teammates. We laugh and have fun while working out, which makes the time fly by. Everyone is super friendly and supportive. I personally have made amazing friends over the years!
What, if any, benefits have you experienced through your participation?
There are numerous benefits I experienced such as seeing beautiful sunrises and learning how to do a burpee properly. One of my favorites is not realizing how strong I’d become. I never thought I could do ‘boot camp’. It most be really difficult and only for athletic people. Was I wrong! By sticking with it and doing the best I can do at that moment, I’ve built up the strength to do bleachers, hill repeats and military runs to eventually running 5ks.
What would you say to someone considering joining the team?
It’s a great way to start your day and be able to say I’ve already exercised today! You don’t have to be super fit - the program is designed so you can make the most out of every exercise. Each workout is different so you’re working different parts of your body each session. You’ll get to a point where you WANT to go to MBC. And Joy and the members are fun and social!
Anything else you’d like to add?
I always feel so much better about myself when I go! I have more energy throughout the day, I have a better attitude and sleep better. I GET to do burpees! I have a love/hate relationship with them. 😊
